The new generation is a media buzz. With Friendship Day arriving, all the advert agencies have bedazzled everyone with diverse innovative artifacts. Like bees get attracted to flowers, many of us are definitely attracted to these. We all love spending time with our friends enjoying wide range of activities but many of us are unknown to the meaning of true friendship.
What is Friendship Day About?
Elbert Hubard quotes “Your friend is the man who knows all about you, and still likes you.” Whilst according to Oscar Wilde, “Anybody can sympathize with the sufferings of a friend, but it requires a very fine nature to sympathize with a friend’s success.” Many learned people have quoted the meaning of friendship in their own words. But have you ever wondered if you know what true friendship is? Do you have a person you call a true friend? Or are you someone’s true friend? True self-introspection can always help you find the answers.
Inception of Friendship Day
The idea was initiated in 1930 by the founder of Hallmark Cards, Joyce Hall. It was intended to celebrate Friendship Day on 2nd August back then. The idea lost its charm slowly. This was due to lack of financial support. Nevertheless, the idea of friends gathering up continued. This gathering led to the birth of World Friendship Crusade, an international organization which promotes peace through friendship internationally. The idea of Friendship’s Day was once again proposed on 20th July, 1958 by Dr. Ramon Artemio Bracho and since, World Friendship Crusade celebrates Friendship’s Day on July 30th.
Later, in 1990s an event was co-sponsored by the U.N Department of Public Information and Disney Enterprises. In this event, Nane Annan, wife of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan honored Friendship Day and named ‘Winnie the Pooh’ as the world’s Ambassador of Friendship at the United Nations.
